I have just finished reading Edward Rutherfurds book Forest.( New Forest Area) I am sure it must have been just like that for our ancestors living in and off the Ashdown forest all those years ago. I think it is in the Funnell's genes to feel a very close attachment to trees and all things wood. My grandfather was a sawyer in both North and South Island (New Zealand) forests. My fathers childhood was spent living in Peel Forest (NZ). So I guess when they left those beautiful areas of Sussex that you have been fortunate to revisit they did not feel too bad.
