   I hesitated a very long time before publishing this. It was sent to me about 5 years ago by Charles Martz and wife Joan (Funnell). Charles sadly passed away a few years ago. I’ve censored the more sensitive parts.
   Due to a computer crash, I’ve lost my contact addresses for the Canadian Funnells.
   It seemed such a pity to have this story hiding away in a corner of my hard disk and not to share it with other Funnell relatives that I finally decided to put it online.
   If anyone is offended or disagrees with it being here, please let me know and I’ll take it down.

   Hello Andy, I am the daughter of Marguerite Elizabeth Funnell. My Mother’s parents were Thomas Earnest Funnell and Ethel Bastin. Arthur Funnell was my Mother’s uncle. I certainly appreciated this story. In the 1970s, I walked the Edson Trail, or what was left of it. I found a ladies wedge heeled shoe and a car steering wheel, near the Athabasca River crossing. My Mother’s sister Mary, said at the time, she knew someone who had seen a piano alongside the trail, with poplar trees growing out of the back of it.

   Hi – my grandfather Bernhard Strand walked the Edson Trail 4 times, once to hear Roald Amundson speak in Edmonton. I’m looking for information on that trip as well as general information on the Edson Trail.

   I found this most interesting. Arthur Funnell was the brother-in-law of my grandmother. Would be very interesting in reading more if available.

   These stories were actually printed in a book intitled “Pioneers of the Peace”. Some Canadian libraries and private sources still have examples but it’s no longer available for sale.
   I now have a scanned copy of these pages if anyone is interested.
   I’ve added the images from these pages to my post which is completed by Charles Martz’ comments.
   You can find Henry Thomas Funnell, his ascendants and descendants in the genealogy section. If you don’t have one, ask for a free user account which will give you access to this information.

   My grandfather was Harry Halcourt Walker ( Harry and Russ who served rice pudding with raisins) who passed away 5 years before my birth in 1944. My father was Rex Barton Walker (d. 1961) and mother was Doris Blake. I am in Ontario and am interested in any relatives I might have in western Canada.

   My grandfather was Arthur Funnell and my mother is Joyce Martin. She is still in Beaverlodge and doing well at the age of eighty three.
   Her brother Tom Funnell and his wife Annebelle still live in Grande Prairie.
   Her sister Kathleen(Snooks) passed away a few years ago and her other brother Bobby has also passed on.
   The Methodist Church is still standing on Halcourt hill.

    My Grandfather was Thomas Ernest Funnell and my mother is Gwendoline Ruth (Funnell)- Soderquist- Loucks. Thank you so much for doing this and showing us our Grandfathers story and his brothers. This is so overwhelming to read. I wish I had the sense to talk more to my Grandfather Tom about his trek across the Edson Trail and his close encounter with the sinking of the Titanic. Grandfather sailed the same day as the Titanic from the same port in 1912. Such history.
    My Grandfather passed away in 1974 just a few weeks after my 1st child was born. My Mom Gwen lives in Fort St.John BC Canada and is 83 years old.
