Funnell coat of arms
Feb 2nd, 2007 by Andy Funnell
Of course, I always knew it ! Us Funnells are of noble descent. At least… those of us from the UK (obviously, for the Aussies, it’s a different story, lol). How could it be otherwise? Our looks, physique, genetic traits… all indications of our thousand year family history taking us way back to times when all worthy men frequented the King and his barons. If not, they were just peasants and we couldn’t be a part of those now could we?
As I say, I just knew it. As do all Funnells in general. It’s in our blood. But never before had I found PROOF!
Well, today I made a major breakthrough in my family history research! Brick walls have been atomized in seconds.
Not only have I found a site which relates our origins; it also supports its historical facts with our Funnell family coat of arms. For copyright reasons, I can’t reproduce it here. That seems a bit abusive to me. A bit like multinationals copyrighting berries growing on trees in the jungle.
I CAN tell you that it’s blue and yellow. A blue square with a wide yellow arrow head pointing to the middle with three red stars, one at each extremity. In each blue part of the square, there is a large bird, swan or geese. The square is surmounted by a knight’s helmet and the whole thing reposes on ancient floral graphics reminiscent of the fleur de lys.
I couldn’t click fast enough to order my copy of the booklet relating our ancient family history. Haven’t experienced such impulse buying for years but well, it’s a virus isn’t it, this genealogy bug we suffer from?
CAN’T WAIT to get my hands on it.

I’m sorry, I don’t normally do this sort of thing. I run several sites (all the others are in French) and not one of them has any publicity or links other than for my own services. However, this was just so much fun I couldn’t resist!
They do deliver the goods and you do get an insight into family name origins.
Please use my link, go to the site and reference it in your favorites (Ctrl + D). Use it if ever you’re looking for original Christmas or birthday presents for family history enthusiasts. It works for any name, not just ours. Funnell.org will receive a small commission which will contribute to research and website fees. Thanks.
Well done on finding the coat of arms – I had trouble when I searched before. Fantastic!! Great website, I have now passed on the address to all the Funnells I know!!! Prepare to be invaded!!!! Do the Funnells with you just talk non-stop? lol
My father always told me that we originated in Peasmarsh, Sussex. However, according to the 1901 Census, my grandfather, Edwin Isaac Funnell was born in Iden in 1963. At some stage he and his brother, name unknown, worked their passage to the USA where grandfather had a farm and his brother started a taxi firm. Lcations not known. Grandfather returned to UK and married Louisa (possibly Taylor borne Guildford) They worked passage to Canada, place unknown, where they had farm and cheese factory. Returned to UK and farmed Dover and Alkham, Kent. It is a pity that when we are young we do not realise that we should seek information from grandparents before they die.
Hi John , a very common Funnell name, also my gt,gt,gt,gt,fathers name born 1764 and loads of others if you look on the sites you will not be alone and I am sure there are many eager persons to help, welcome. Gail
Hello John,
What a wonderful website! I’ve recently started researching the Funnell side of my family – Henry Funnell and Elizabeth Holman are my paternal great great grandparents. I have little or no information or photographs of them so to find this was such good news.I’ve researched mums side of the family and have now started on dads and it’s always good to meet new members of the family – however distant. Best wishes Barbara.
Hi Barbara – I’ve just found this site and your reference to Henry and Elizabeth Holman. They were my great great grandparents also, which means we are related slightly closer than many other Funnells. It would be interesting, perhaps, to swap notes on how we descend. I’m the same guy that Andy referes to above – at the time I was in Balcombe, now Storrington. MY email is jfunn@aol.com. Hope to hear from you. Regards, Jeff Funnell
