I recently discovered that my GG Grandad was William Elliott born in Mayfield or likely Wadhurst Sussex in 1794. By 1825 he had moved permanently to Bermondsey in London. He was a carpenter or cabinet maker. I would like to know if there are any clues as to whether or not he was related to Edward Elliott mentioned here and also if there are any more stories about the Elliotts in East Sussex.

According to the records of the Sussex Assizes County Sessions, Eastern Division, he was tried on the 2nd of July 1838 and acquitted of sheep stealing.
A public tree on Ancestry (although it does not mention this) has him born 1818 in Burwash, son of William Sands and Rose Anna Sharpe Watson, married Elizabeth Relf in 1840 and residing in St Paul Deptford, London in 1871.
Hope this will help.

A really interesting article. My family of Sands came from Burwash and I place them at Burwash Weald or 'Wheel' so named after the pub the Catherine of Aragon or the Catherine Wheel.. the so called roughest pub in England.
I'd love to find out who this Charles Sands was. My 4x's great grandfather Richard Sands died before the first census in 1841 and Charles does not seem to be one of his children bap at Burwash and he left a will with all his living children recorded, proved in 1832. I'd like to find out who this Charles was, no mention on familysearch.org the IGI or in the Burwash reg's. I'd love to know more about Burwash too at this time. The Funnells were a well known family in the area and I remember my father mentioning them.
Like to know where your refs come from,
