RE: WILLIAM CHARLES FUNNELL d. 7/2/1917
There are only two Commonweath burials at CRECY-EN-PONTHIEU COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Somme, France.
The other one is my Great Grandfather Driver Francis Robert Lowe 99690 of the Royal Horse Artillery who died on 22/10/1916.
I'm not sure if that is the only connection between them?

She is probably Emily born in Portsea (4th quarter 1862 2b 374), daughter of Alfred Funnell and Fanny Thorpe. She is mentioned in the comment to this story. That would make her Edward the watchmakers niece. I'd be very interested in more details about your cutting and birthday book if you're willing to share. You can contact me privately via the contact page.

Hi, My daughter came across this site today. My Gt Grandmother was Emilie (Emily?) Funnell b.7/11/1862. I don't know quite where she fits in but I already knew about 'the watch' because I have been handed down an old newspaper cutting about it. I also have a 'Birthday book' which belonged to her from 1884. I noticed she wasn't listed as one of Edwards children, have you any ideas? Emily married Richard John Price (Portsmouth) Kind regards Nikki.

Dear Andy
Thank you for your reply
I don't know where you live but in T Wells library there is a book on the Hythe, "The unfinished journey" by Michael J Penfold that is worth a read. You will have to ask for it at the counter as it is kept in a back room.
Also look on the microfilm of the Courier for 12 Nov 1915 as this has quite a spread on the disaster including photos of many of the casualties. I think there are also some in subsequent issues in 1915. Probably also worth a look in the Advertiser and Gazette.
Best wishes
James

Hi Kylie
I was most surprised to read your 'plea'. I was corresponding with George some years ago - about 1993-4 just before his wife, Sissi, died.
For several Christmas' we exchanged cards and then they stopped so I did the worst thing possible in family tree - I 'presumed' he had passed away! (I saw a bolt of lightening not long ago!!)
I sent George all the information I had on his family at that time including certificates. I am surprised that George is still under the impression that his mother kept his twin brother whilst sending him to an orphanage because that is not true. George's brother, Wallace, died 23 Oct 1926 - just about 5 weeks old!
Their mother, Ellen Ann, died aged 49 unmarried - she had the twins when she was 37 (quite an age for an unmarried mother!)
Ellen's father, James Funnell married 1885 to Mercy Hoad. Both were born in Herstmonceux and got married there.
Unfortunately Mercy died the age of 34 leaving her husband to bring up a young family - 5 under the age of 15. Samson died aged 25 unmarried; Mercy died a spinster aged 78; two sisters, Nellie and Rose married brothers and one of these couples had a daughter Mary Battle born 1920 Eastbourne. Difficult to find descendants from female ancestors - but I will try. Perhaps going back a further generation will find more results of living relatives but a little more distant.
Please give George my kindest regards (if he remembers me!)
All the very best
Wendy Russell nee Funnell

Name: Kylie
E-mail address: kyles4you@yahoo.com
Comments: I am writing on behalf of my good friend George Funnell. He was born in 1926 in England(now 81 years old). He was unfortunately abandoned at an orphanage in Eastborne at 3 years of age. He has no known relatives but believes that when his mother gave him away she kept his brother. It would mean the world to George if he could finally connect to someone related to him. He also resided at a boys home north of London until he joined the army and eventually moved to Australia. If anyone has any information or thinks they may be related to George, please contact me. George is now in a retirement village and suffers poor health. It would be great to find a relative before it's too late.
