Sorry Michelle, this is not much help but I thought you might like to know. My great, great grandfather was a Charles Funnell and came to New Zealand approx 1872/73, and died 1920, aged 94 years, which made his birth year approx 1826. He lived in Kent (Sevenoaks). His Eldest son was Aslo called Charles, so it wouls appear that Charles was a common name to called a male Funnell child at the time. What I find interesting is that my father, married a girl whose mother was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
