Re. Peter William Funnell. 1824-1889.
Hello, I am looking for any info on my Great great grandfather, Peter William Funnell, who was born in Cuckfield in 1824. He married Harriet Dubbins in 1845 in the Strand district of London, and had three daughters, Ellen Augusta, ( my Great grandmother), Emma Mildred, and Florence; they also had at least one son. They lived at
80 Loughborough Park, Brixton, London. Any info would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Only just discovered this web site having been looking for more information on my Great-Great Grandfather William Funnell. I have no information on his birth, but he married my G.G. Grandmother Harriett Brown on 9th Feb 1853 in Clerkenwell, Middlesex. She came from Pyecombe (Sussex) and they met while William was working as a labourer on the building of the London-Brighton railway. He later joined the Grenadier Guards (3rd Battalion) and was stationed at the Tower of London where my G. Grandmother Sarah Amelia Funnell was baptised in 1854. The same year William was posted to the Crimea where he later died of Cholera.
Should anyone have any information to link William to his parents and/or birthplace I would love to hear from them.
Steve
Thanks for pointing that out, Murray. Unfortunately, there was a hack attack against TNG powered sites some months back and the Wood was amongst them. You saw the result. Individuals find themselves with two or three sets of parents. There is no way to automatically detect or repair this and although I’ve corrected several dozens of records, there are probably some that I’ve missed. As far as I know, only the Chiddingly tree was affected.
If anyone comes across any more, please let me know.
I have put things right for Philadelphia. The note was incorrect, the marriage is OK.
Dear Andy
I have just renewed my acquaintance with your beautiful Funnell’s Wood and I am just thrilled to be a part of it. Thank you for your superb work.
I have noted a little problem though. Philadelphia Funnell (I67) is shown as a daughter of William Funnell and Mary Townsett on F22 but I suggest it cannot be correct. Poor Philadelphia has two sets of parents? F36 is probably correct. F45 also records her marriage to Thomas SMITH and their children but notes on I67 have her dead around 17 years of age, before her children were born!
Best regards

Good Evening
I am just beginning my search for Funnells. The Funnels I am looking for lived in Montreal, PQ, but I think originated from Ireland.
My great grandfather was John Edward Funnell (engineer) who was married to Anna Elizabeth Robb (was known as Eliza). They had three children:
Ruby Margaret, Violet Helena Elisabethy and Ernest Edward who was my grandfather. He was married to Hannah May Jones who came from Liverpool, England.
I think there is a connection to relatives in Chicago as my mother told me she used to travel there with her grandmother when she was young.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Donna
Inspired by Andy, I recently went in search of Fletching, birthplace of my forefather Samuel (1668). I found the church with its elegant spire and the beautiful small village that surrounds it. I could hear Sunday morning service, so couldn’t go inside on this trip, but will return! I had rather hoped to find the tombstones of those early Funnells, but stones as old as that, I soon saw, were too weathered to be legible. But I spent a pleasant quiet time imagining life as it might have been all those centuries ago for my family. A highlight of my trip south was meeting, for the first time, my grandfather’s great nephew and his wife, in Lewes, and taking photos at the site of John Funnell’s wheelwright’s shop, and of houses he built and lived in in South Street. My grandfather had told me of the felling of timber in Ashdown Forest, and the way the logs were floated down to Lewes, where they had to be dried out for seven years before use. I saw on the road to Lewes the pub from which my great-grandfather John once towed his cart when a horse he was expecting for the job failed to turn up. It must have been a journey of five or six miles. I remember hearing that story, and Andy too had heard it. The Australian bush must have been a huge contrast for Frank and his young family as they settled at Wyee, north of Sydney, and began to plant an orchard in 1915. When they finally built a house in Sydney, they called it ‘South Downs’, and driving through the rolling green of Sussex, I could see why.
Hi Andy,
Thanks very much for getting in contact with me with all the info.
My Grandfather Frederick John Funnell b.1905 Lewes had a sister Grace and a brother Charlie, unfortunately i got a bit lost ( too many interuptions ) but i think you have someone else as Freds sister.

Hope to hear from you soon.
Sharon
(Sorry, Jenny!) Sharon, I think I’ve found your missing links. You’ll need a user account to access the data. If you have not aleady got one, just click on the Genealogy tab above and then sur “Register for a user account”. You will find your grandfather and several generations back. Please read my notes at the bottom of the pages. If you can shed some light as to whether they emigrated or whatever, I would love to know.
Hello Sharon
I see my grandfather’s brother Frederick was born in 1869 and your Frederick was born 1905. He did have a brother Charlie (Walter Charles born 1877) and two sisters Mary (1870) and Sarah (1875). The website might tell us whether your Frederick was the son of my Frederick!
All best
Jenny
Jennifer
my grandfather only had 1 brother as far as i know, and he was called Charlie.
My Great Grandfather Also called Frederick John Funnell had 3 sisters.
Let me know if you still think there maybe a connection.
Regards Sharon
My name is Jennifer Gribble, grand daughter of Frank Funnell born Lewes 1886, migrated to Australia around 1914. Keen to know more about the family Wheelwright’s Shop in Lewes, about which my grandfather often spoke. Sharon, who posted in February 2009, your grandfather was my grandfather’s brother I think. Andy, this is a great site. Congratulations.
Re: RONALD S. FUNNELL – NEWQUAY
Hello everyone
I am trying to track down relatives of Ronald S Funnell who lived in Newquay in the 1930s – he was involved in surfing, and I run the Museum of British Surfing.
The museum has several his old books and surfboards – but we need more information and artefacts to pull together a proper display/history.
Here’s an extract of what I know so far:
Kind regards, Peter

Hi. My name is Richard Funnell. My fathers family orginated in the Sussex area, seems quite a common thread for the Funnell family. I understand from my aunt, on my fathers side that my Grandfather Richard (Dick) Funnell may have been a local Bexhill-on-Sea councillor. He’s claim to fame was that he was involved with the Bexhill pavillion. I am really interested in finding out more about him. I know he died very young. I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of understanding more about my Grandfather.
Hi my name is Linda Ann Smith (nee Funnell). I was born in Eastbourne, Sussex. My dad was Percy James Funnell and my mum was Lilian Betty Weller.
