Un air de famille
Feb 2nd, 2007 by Andy Funnell
The other day I did a Google image search for Funnells. After scrolling through a few pages, looking at the odd Funnell squeezed in between pictures of Pippa, I started thinking they resembled each other. I don’t know much on genetics, DNA and all that but could it really be that after centuries of interbreeding, we can retain an “air de famille”.
Have a look at this bunch of Funnells. I only know 4 or 5 of them. But they do look alike.
Don’t they? Tell me it’s not my imagination… please.
I’d be interested to read your comments on this. Click on “Comments” at the bottom of the page.

I live in east sussex was born in eastbourne on the 29/8/1934 my father was borne in Lewes on 26/6/1907.to James William Funnell mother was Martha Lucy Funnell
It’s the chin. Everyone in my family has the same chin.
On my side of the Funnell family, including myself and children, we all seem to have rather large, punch-like noses with large, long ears! and many of the above appear to fit that description.
There are so many likenesses when I look at the photos especially in comparison to my children.
It’s the nose and the ears. My grandfather Robert Frank, b-1892 passed them on to his children, whenever the family get together we refer to the “Funnell” nose.
It sure is the nose and ears! Pretty scary! We always say ‘seen one Funnell you’ve seen them all’. The kiwi Funnells here in NZ all appear to have the ears and nose, so must be the dominant genes.
In my family, for generations now, all babies have a red birth mark on the back of their neck. Is there anyone else who has come across this.
The nose! Mum is always talking about the Funnell nose, and certainly most of the people in the pictures as well as all my aunties share it.
The smiley fellow in the Australian RAF uniform looks so much like my Dad as a young man! It’s the sticky out ears and square jaw (which unfortunately I’ve inherited!) as well as the large nose (which I haven’t – phew) Also Funnell eyes are all quite similar – brown with slightly heavy eyebrows
