Winifred Funnell’s sampler
Feb 10th, 2014 by Andy Funnell
Thanks to Sarah Russell for sending this. The sampler was worked by Ruth Sparks and owned by Winifred Louisa Funnell born 1897 in Hastings (died 1988 in Eastbourne). It was given to her by her mother, Amelia Funnell (nee Pratt) born 1865 in West Walton, Norfolk (died 1950, Eastbourne).
Sarah bought it at an auction and found this information attached.
Ruth Sparks was born 1802 at Hunston Wood, Northamptonshire, her father was a gamekeeper in 1841, the Jones family were farmers/farm stewards. She worked the sampler in 1833 for Mary Louisa Jones (married name Pratt) whilst she was her governess. In 1844, Ruth married Robert Lowden at Haydon, Northumberland.
